Update: It's now been almost six weeks since PlayStation last posted to its Facebook and Instagram pages, suggesting its boycott has officially been extended. It's unclear when it will next update its social media accounts. Curiously, Sony's primary accounts have been updating again, as have divisions like Sony Music and Sony Pictures.
Original Story: PlayStation is an absolute juggernaut on social media, commanding gigantic followings on services such as Instagram and Facebook. As such, it’s actually quite crazy that the company still hasn’t updated either of its pages, after adding its voice to the #StopHateForProfit campaign. Sony sided with companies such as Coca-Cola, Ford, and Starbucks at the beginning of July, as firms attempt to put pressure on Facebook to improve its hate speech policies.
But despite the Japanese giant claiming that it would return to the social networks at the start of August, both of its pages remain abandoned. This is actually quite surprising, as it reaches 26.7 million followers on Instagram and an eye-watering 38.9 million followers on Facebook. And that’s just the non-paid content – it’s difficult to imagine just how many users it reaches via sponsored posts and other paid promotional opportunities.
We’ll reach out to Sony and try to learn if it’s extended its boycott. If so, it’ll be interesting to see when it returns, because while it clearly wants to hit Facebook where it hurts – well, it does have a next-gen console to advertise as well…

Playstation netherlands is still advertising on both.
EDIT: I checked to be sure. They don’t. All advertisements I see constantly is old advertisement.
Quite a thing when they have PS5 to promote, they could easily have gone back on that just so they can have that exposure.
I bet the social media team is a little bit frustrated. The engagement they've been getting is insane, and they must have wanted to keep the truck rolling.
Obviously Sony and the other companies supporting this are doing it with the right intentions, though!
Turned off Facebook years ago.
That's what happens after you play Watchdogs.
Also my friends can't spell which infureated ne.
These Tech Giants are not after money.............its info they want who are we talking to what are we buying if we are for BLM or against are we more likely to vote for the Democrats........These tech Giants are not here to bow to Sony.
Sony as a money making machine need Facebook.
Facebook does not need Sony........it will get its info elsewhere.
@themcnoisy same here never used it.
Personally, I don’t support this.
Yes, we have to stop hate, but I think it is quite selective. There is a lot of hate out there and there always will be. But it is impossible for Facebook and other companies to fully clamp down on it without going way too far and restricting freedom of speech.
Fair play to Sony for sticking with what they believe, but I think it is a bit misguided and the endgame I don’t support.
@Kienda This was about more than just stopping hate speech. It was also about FB allowing the spread of misinformation and fake news. As well as the proliferation of Child sex abuse on FB platforms.
@phil_j I agree with ending the spread of child abuse (obviously) and I think more should be done against it, but there is a big difference between that kind of content and “fake news”.
Misinformation is subjective, it isn’t set in stone. And some things labelled as fake are later proven true or facts today are discredited tomorrow.
So that is why I disagree with it. Clearly abuse isn’t acceptable, but truth is subjective.
Combat hate, yes. But there is more nuance to news and information than some are willing to accept.
I don't like how I can't post screenshots or videos directly to FaceBook using my PS4, I assume this was why they took that function away?
Good. There are other ways of spreading the word and Facebook are still holding steady, allowing hate speech, child porn and misinformation to remain on their site. Twitter aren’t much better, mind.
Social media is the Cancer of society, so I'm all for it.
@Number09 Well... They want info because it makes them money. They sell the info to advertisers (like Sony) to help them target and refine their ads. So in that sense they need Sony as much as any other multinational. It's all one big circle-jerk.
I hate speech too.
Its fun to able instantly post on facebook and see reaction of my friends at some of my specific uploads, but losing that feature is not a big loss.
we still can upload them manually if we want to.
but regarding 'social media', well, i prefer Playstation to improve the home dashboard, need them more faster at performance, more accesibilty, even more interactive, but of course need the PS user community to be active to keep sharing and reacting.
Make the home menu feels like home.
@Hengist or idiot progressives, whichever way you look at it, There’s morons on both sides of the argument
@cashflowx shhhhh don’t give them facts... they don’t like it
@cashflowx Right here and now both Trump and Boris Johnson are playing games and pushing barriers of the political systems which have kept our countries in relatively good stead for a relatively long period of time. Its up to you how you see things and living your lifestyle and who will benefit you the most it's clear who you will vote for. But we are heading into really choppy waters with those blaggers in charge on the international stage. But are we always in flux? Is this an inevitability? Will crap happen anyway? Are all politicians as selfish it's just Trump comes out and says what he thinks?
Trump is no angel and is clearly in it for himself. He comes across well at rallies and has quite the Persona. Unfortunately and unforgiveably he gave the nod to separate children from parents and lock them in cages with his wife wearing an I don't care coat. That never will sit right with me, kids should never be locked in cages. Mass immigration is such a taboo subject and is a real issue which has also faced our country, but you simply cannot lock kids away from their parents it's the single worst thing you can do bar murdering them. I would rather lose everything than have my daughter taken away to god knows where for who knows how long to face God knows what.
And with that I don't know how anyone could vote for him.
(I don't know anything about Biden but he seems like the American version of Jeremy Corbyn and that isn't a good look)
In a two horse race with a ton of history and experience behind them you could pull dirt on practically anyone the same age in a similar social standing. But for me America has a solid backbone to do good for the world, peace and unity, good will to all men. Is Trump the man who can unite everyone when he slanders everyone he works with?
I support this but for completely different reasons. FB and all social media is SNITCHING. It's literally allowing authorities and data mining companies to spy on you , your friends, and family with the information you provide voluntarily. And then they share that info to others. If that wasn't enough, it is also brainwashing you. How stupid could you have to be to use it?.
@cashflowx 'You are an idiot of epic proportions.'
At least I have the intellect to make my point without resorting to making personal attacks against fellow forum users.
'Here you support a man'
Where in my post did I say that I support Biden? This is YOUR incorrect assumption, which you've invented within your own head and are now poorly attempting to label me with.
'So, shut the f*** up mouthbreather, you don't jack squat about life you mark.'
I see that your parents have done a real good job at teaching you social values and how to conduct yourself in today's world. I almost feel sorry for you, especially if you're going to pass these values on to your own children. I have no knowledge regarding your own personal political affiliations, but based upon your behaviour here, you appear to be a typical Trump supporter.
@Mikey856 'or idiot progressives, whichever way you look at it, There’s morons on both sides of the argument'
I totally agree with you on that, Mikey.
Honestly haven't noticed... so it shows you how much those platforms don't really matter.
@Kienda "there's a lot of hate it there and there will always be"
So what do nothing and expect things to change? You clearly lack common sense.
All social media is awful for our society, it’s bad for our mental health and I truly believe we’d be better off without it again.
Do I agree with Sony here, no, ‘hate’ speech is completely subjective and mainly used as a tool to silence opposition to anyone right of the far left.
Twitter is just as bad. Why don't they stop advertising there? YouTube as well.
Is it because most of their demographic is on those sites?
And because no one under the age of 40 gives a **** about Facebook?
I dunno. I only use YouTube anyway, I don't really care. I'm just talking crap, devil's advocate. It's just weird though.
@Kienda Racism should not be protected by freedom of speech i will never accept that excuse. Misinformation is extremely dangerous diseases that where are coming back because of the antivax nonsense too name one thing.
@Constable_What "e no one under the age of 40 gives a **** about Facebook?"
Why so many people make these factually incorrect statements is beyond me.
@naruball "Twitter is just as bad. Why don't they stop advertising there? YouTube as well.

How so many people take things out of context and try and twist things is beyo--. Oh wait, no it isn't.
It starts with S, and rhymes with epitome.
Yeah. That's right. Some-dude-intentionally-misquoted-me.
What hate speech are you talking about? Is it because Facebook isn't blocking hate speech? Also what is considered hate speech and if they use opinion to dictate that then there can be bias. Just wondering what this is all about.
@Flaming_Kaiser racism speech should not be blocked because of freedom of speech we can also argue against it and give great examples of why racism is wrong. A thought I have that in a (almost) perfect world if we hid racism from young eyes that there will still be some who will get racist ideas. That's how all of this started in the first place and if racism was hidden and not argued against, newer generations will think it's a new idea that has logic to back. It's best to be open about everything as much as possible. Ok enough talk on this. LET'S GET GAMING! 😁👏🏻
To take on Facebook is huge, so this is good.
